Instagram updated its algorithm in May 2026 and will now prioritize original content while penalizing accounts that repost others' content.
The measure expands restrictions that previously affected mainly Reels and will now also apply to photos and carousels. The goal is to reduce the visibility of “aggregator” pages that make a living by reposting content taken from other accounts or platforms such as TikTok.
Under the new rules, accounts that post 10 or more non-original pieces of content within a 30-day period will no longer appear in recommendation sections such as Explore and Reels, losing a significant portion of their organic reach.
In addition, Instagram will begin detecting posts with watermarks, repurposed videos, and minor edits deemed to be of “low value,” automatically limiting their reach.
The platform will also implement technical tools to identify reposted content and combat the classic “copy-and-paste” practice, with the aim of improving content quality and rewarding creators who produce their own material.
